HAVEN’s residential program is Oakland County’s only 24-hour emergency shelter exclusively for domestic violence and sexual assault victims and their children. Haven serves Oakland County as a comprehensive program for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, HAVEN provides shelter, counseling, advocacy and educational programming to nearly 20,000 people each year.
If you have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault, you and your children may be eligible to stay at the shelter.
- Men are allowed to stay at the shelter if they are being sexually abused or hurt by their wife, girlfriend or partner.
- If you are a child (under 18) without a parent, you cannot stay at the shelter, but staff will help you find another place to stay.
- Emancipated minors are welcome to stay at our shelter.
Victims entering the shelter will need to live peacefully with a diverse variety of individuals who may differ in their beliefs, values and goals.
For safety reasons, guests may not visit residents on-site.

HAVEN Counseling Program
The non-residential Counseling Program serves individuals of all ages who have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault. Counselors are specially trained to address the safety needs and concerns of domestic violence and sexual assault survivors. Both group and individual counseling are available.

All counseling clients can also be assisted with personal protection orders, housing resources, access to a career center, and referrals for health and financial assistance.
HAVEN counseling services are offered free of charge.
Court Advocacy at HAVEN
Advocates provide support and education for victims moving through the legal system, as well as immediate crisis intervention and emotional support for victims and their families after an assault. Advocates at HAVEN provide a safe, supportive and nonjudgmental atmosphere for victims of domestic violence or sexual assault to begin to rebuild trust, to develop a sense of security, and to reduce feelings of isolation and self-blame. Advocates assist victims with their concerns in a confidential manner without interfering with the medical, reporting, investigative or court processes.
All advocacy services are confidential and free of charge. This program is supported by VOCA (Victims of Crime Act).
The Safe Therapeutic Assault Response Team (START)
Forensic nurse examiners and first responders provide comprehensive forensic exams and compassionate emotional support for victims of sexual assault.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Support Groups at HAVEN

Survivors of Domestic Violence
We offer a combination of educational and support groups for survivors of domestic violence. These groups are ongoing and meet once a week for an hour and a half.
Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Assault
There are two groups. The first is an 8-to-10 week educational group focusing on the issue of being an adult survivor. The second is an ongoing support group for those who have completed the first group.
Teen Women’s Support
This group is specifically for teenage women who have suffered trauma from dating violence, sexual assault or child abuse.
Survivors of Sexual Assault Support
A support group for female survivors of sexual assault.
WAVE (Women Against Violent Encounters)
An “Emotions Management” group for women to help them identify and express emotions related to domestic violence.
Specialty Groups and Workshops

Personal Protection Order (PPO) Office at HAVEN
On October 1, 2006, HAVEN adopted the Oakland County Personal Protection Order (PPO) Office after the closure of the Women’s Survival Center. It is located at the Oakland County Circuit Court.
Victims of stalking and domestic violence are often confused and intimidated by the PPO process. Our skilled staff helps make this process simple and provides reassurance to those who may not have had experience with the court system.
