First Steps in Becoming Self-Reliant may seem difficult and I know you’re probably having a rough time right now, but I wanted you to know that there are many people and resources available to you that can help you become completely self-sufficient. It may seem daunting and like it will take forever, but it really won’t.

Here are some things you can do to start.

Find a Job

If you don’t have a job, the first thing you can do is to go over to your local Michigan Works center and apply to jobs in their database. It’s pretty quick and painless. Keep in mind, you’ll need a resume in order to take full advantage of this service. If you do not have a resume, you can contact Light House of Oakland County or check out this article to help you. There are organizations in Oakland county that will help you with job interview preparation as well as appropriate clothing for job interviews. Get Your GED

If you don’t have your high school diploma yet, you can get your GED by completing a test. Preparation for this is offered by Grace Centers of Hope.

Get Your Own Place

If you’re looking to find your own apartment, but don’t have a security deposit, don’t worry – you still have options. There are organizations in Oakland County that will help you with a security deposit as well as other financial needs. Please keep in mind all funds are not unlimited, so you may have to try a few organizations before you find one that can help.

Simply call them, explain your situation and ask them for help. People want to help you.

Don’t Go Hungry

While there aren’t organizations that will provide all of your food for you, there are many that will help with supplemental food. This means, you will be able to get food from them up to twice a month in most cases. Each food pantry has city limits, so please comment below or reach out to the organizations directly to make sure you’re in their eligible area – this may also determine where you find housing.  You can find a full list of food pantries by clicking here.
